Driving Lessons for Beginners in Ireland: How to Get Started and Build Confidence

Learning to drive is a big step. It gives you more independence, makes everyday journeys easier and opens up opportunities that may have been difficult to reach without a car.

For a complete beginner, though, the process can seem complicated. There are theory tests, learner permits, compulsory lessons and plenty of new skills to develop before you are ready for the driving test.

The best approach is to take it one stage at a time. You do not need to know how to drive before your first lesson. You need the right preparation, clear instruction and enough practice to become a safe and confident driver.

Here is what beginners should know about starting driving lessons in Ireland.

Step 1: Get Your Learner Permit Before Starting Lessons

Before you can take driving lessons on public roads in Ireland, you must pass the Driver Theory Test and obtain a learner permit.

The theory test checks your knowledge of road signs, traffic rules, safe driving practices and hazard awareness. It is worth spending time studying the official material rather than relying entirely on practice questions.

Once you pass, you can apply for your learner permit through the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS).

For a first-time car learner, the main requirements include:

Passing the relevant Driver Theory Test.
Obtaining a valid learner permit.
Carrying your learner permit when driving.
Following the restrictions that apply to learner drivers.
Completing the required Essential Driver Training (EDT).

You must also be accompanied when driving outside a lesson by someone who has held a full, valid driving licence in the same category for more than two years. Learner drivers cannot drive on motorways.

You can check the official process on the Government of Ireland guide to learning to drive.

Step 2: Understand Essential Driver Training (EDT)

If you are a first-time learner permit holder for a car and are subject to the standard EDT programme, you must complete 12 one-hour sessions with an RSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).

These sessions are designed to develop the skills needed to drive safely. They cover different areas of driving, with each lesson building on the knowledge and experience gained previously.

EDT includes topics such as:

Car controls and safety checks.
Correct road positioning.
Changing direction.
Managing progress and speed.
Anticipation and reaction.
Sharing the road with other users.
Driving safely through traffic.
Driving calmly and managing more demanding situations.
Night driving.

The sessions are recorded in your EDT logbook and through the MyEDT system. Your instructor should update your training record as you complete each session.

One important point: completing 12 EDT lessons does not automatically mean you are ready for the driving test. The RSA recommends practising between lessons and developing experience in different road and traffic conditions.

You can read more about the programme on the RSA's official EDT page.

Step 3: Choose a Driving Instructor Who Suits You

The instructor you learn with can make a considerable difference to your experience. Beginners often have questions, need instructions repeated and take time to become comfortable with the controls.

Look for an instructor who explains things clearly and gives you useful feedback.

Check that the instructor is RSA-approved

Your compulsory EDT sessions must be delivered by an RSA Approved Driving Instructor. You can check an instructor's registration through the RSA's official register.

Do this before booking your lessons. It is especially important if you are paying for an EDT package in advance.

Ask about teaching style

A good instructor should be willing to explain why you need to perform a particular action, not simply tell you what to do.

For example, understanding why you check your mirrors before changing speed will help you apply that habit in different situations.

Consider patience and communication

Some learners pick up the basics quickly. Others need more time with clutch control, steering or road positioning. That is normal.

A patient driving instructor should recognise where you are struggling and adjust the lesson accordingly. You should feel comfortable asking questions rather than worrying about making mistakes.

Compare lesson arrangements

The RSA does not set a standard price for EDT sessions. Instructors determine their own fees, so compare prices, lesson availability, location and arrangements before committing.

The RSA's guidance on finding an ADI provides further advice.

Step 4: Learn the Basic Driving Skills Gradually

When you are new to driving, there are several things to think about at once. You need to control the car, watch the road, observe other traffic and respond to instructions.

Trying to master everything immediately can make lessons feel overwhelming. A structured approach helps you build skills in manageable stages.

Vehicle controls and clutch control

If you are learning in a manual car, you will need to become familiar with the clutch, accelerator, brake and gears.

Finding the biting point and moving away smoothly can take practice. You may stall the engine occasionally while learning. Rather than becoming frustrated, focus on understanding what caused it and how to correct it.

Automatic lessons remove the need to operate a clutch or change gears manually. However, you still need to develop good steering, observation, braking and road awareness.

Steering and road positioning

You will learn how to steer smoothly, maintain a suitable road position and judge the space around your vehicle.

Good positioning matters when passing parked cars, approaching junctions and negotiating narrower roads.

Mirrors and observation

Mirror checks should become part of your normal driving routine. You need to understand what is happening behind and beside you, particularly before changing direction, slowing down or moving position.

Observation also means looking ahead and anticipating what other road users may do.

Junctions and roundabouts

Junctions and roundabouts can be challenging for beginners because they require observation, timing and decision-making.

You will gradually learn how to approach them at a safe speed, choose the correct position, give way where required and proceed when it is safe.

Do not worry if these situations take several lessons to feel comfortable. They involve skills that develop with experience.

Step 5: Practise Between Your Driving Lessons

Professional lessons give you guidance, but supervised practice helps reinforce what you have learned.

If you have access to a suitable insured car and an eligible accompanying driver, regular practice can help you become more familiar with the vehicle and different road conditions.

Try to make practice purposeful. Instead of simply driving around without a plan, ask your instructor which skills need more attention.

You could focus on:

Moving off and stopping smoothly.
Maintaining a steady road position.
Checking mirrors consistently.
Approaching junctions safely.
Reading road signs and markings.
Managing speed in different conditions.
Anticipating the actions of other road users.

Keep a note of anything you find difficult. You can discuss it with your instructor at the next lesson.

Remember that learner permit restrictions apply whenever you practise. You must be accompanied by an eligible qualified driver and cannot drive on motorways.

Manual or Automatic Driving Lessons: Which Is Better for Beginners?

There is no universal answer. Your choice should depend on the type of vehicle you intend to drive and the learning experience you prefer.

Manual driving lessons	Automatic driving lessons
You learn to use the clutch and change gears.	The vehicle changes gears automatically.
You develop clutch control and gear coordination.	You can focus more on steering, observation and road awareness.
You may need additional practice to coordinate the controls.	Some beginners find the controls easier to manage.
Passing the test in a manual car allows you to drive manual and automatic cars, subject to licence conditions.	Passing in an automatic car results in an automatic-only licence restriction.

If you are unsure, speak to an instructor before booking. Consider whether you will need to drive a manual vehicle in the future and whether you are comfortable learning to coordinate the clutch and gears.

You can explore the automatic driving lessons offered by Next Level Driving School if you would prefer to learn in an automatic car.

How Many Driving Lessons Do Beginners Need?

The number of lessons required varies from person to person.

Your previous experience, confidence, ability to understand instructions and the amount of supervised practice you complete can all affect your progress.

The 12 EDT sessions are compulsory for learners subject to the standard programme. They provide a foundation, but many learners need additional lessons and practice before they can drive independently to test standard.

Rather than focusing only on the number of lessons, consider whether you can:

Control the vehicle safely and consistently.
Observe and respond to changing road conditions.
Position the car correctly.
Make safe decisions at junctions and roundabouts.
Manage speed and maintain appropriate progress.
Drive without relying on constant instructor prompts.

Your instructor can help identify the areas that still need work.

Common Challenges for Beginner Drivers

It is normal to find some parts of driving easier than others. Recognising common challenges can help you approach them with more patience.

Stalling a manual car: This often happens when the clutch and accelerator are not coordinated properly. Practising the biting point can improve control.

Feeling overwhelmed at junctions: Beginners may struggle to judge gaps in traffic. Take your time, improve your observation and follow your instructor's guidance.

Forgetting mirror checks: Make mirror observation a deliberate habit during lessons until it becomes more natural.

Driving too close to parked vehicles: Work on looking further ahead and judging the space available around your car.

Losing confidence after a mistake: One difficult moment does not mean you are a poor driver. Listen to the feedback, understand what happened and practise again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I start driving lessons without a learner permit in Ireland?

No. You need a valid learner permit before you can take driving lessons on public roads.

How many EDT lessons do beginner drivers need?

Most first-time car learner permit holders must complete 12 one-hour EDT sessions with an RSA Approved Driving Instructor. Some drivers may qualify for reduced EDT, depending on their circumstances.

Can I take driving lessons if I have never driven before?

Yes. Beginner lessons are designed for people with no previous driving experience. Your instructor will introduce the controls and help you develop the basic skills gradually.

Is it better to take one driving lesson or two each week?

Consistency is useful, but the right frequency depends on your availability, budget and opportunities for supervised practice. Discuss a realistic schedule with your instructor.

Should beginners learn in a manual or automatic car?

Both are options. Manual lessons teach you to operate the clutch and gears, while automatic lessons remove those tasks. Remember the automatic-only restriction if you pass your test in an automatic car.

Can I practise driving with a family member?

Yes, provided the accompanying driver meets the legal requirements and the vehicle is properly insured. You must follow all learner permit conditions, including displaying L-plates and not driving on motorways.

Take the First Step Towards Driving Independently

Learning to drive takes time, and there will be skills that need more practice than others. Focus on building safe habits from the beginning. Ask questions, take feedback seriously and make time for supervised practice between lessons.
